PSG 2024 Workshops

Every year, PSG presents a wide array of workshops, rituals and more by Circle ministers and community members.  Workshops marked with (PLI) are part of the Pagan Leadership Institute, a long-standing PSG tradition providing training and guidance to Pagan ministers and community leaders.

PLI workshops are open to all adults.

After Morning Meeting on Monday, when there will be a parade to Gnome camp or any time during the week bring your Gnome to Gnome Camp where they will celebrate PSG together. For the Gnomes that were here in prior years, it will be a reunion, and they can share stories of their adventures throughout the year. New Gnome Brothers and Sisters, and other Fae folk, are welcome too. Saturday morning, or before you leave PSG return to Gnome Camp, and collect a different Gnome than the one you brought, to be your companion till next you return to PSG. This has become something of a tradition so find yourself a Gnome, because no one should go UnGnomed, and bring them to PSG.

A Beautiful Death – Why Talking About Death Matters – PLI with Rev. Sharon Stewart

Why aren’t we talking about death and making end-of-life plans in advance of needing them? It’s never easy, but it matters! These conversations can be some of the best and most intimate that families and friends share. As a minister and leader, we can facilitate these conversations to help the dying have their wishes carried out at death. These meaningful conversations can then lead to the creation of beautiful memorials, funerals, and celebrations of life ceremonies. In this workshop, we’ll learn the tools to carry out these conversations and how to build healing rituals and services not only after death, but before death even happens. This workshop addresses Circle Ministry Competency 6.

Active Nonjudgmental Listening - Playing Baseball – PLI with Jimmy Butterfly

So often when we enter into sensitive conversations, the conversation turns into tennis. While you're talking, I'm already planning my response. I'm listening with the intent of hitting the ball back to you. Active listening is more like baseball. When you're pitching, my only job is to catch. My job isn't to respond or interpret. My job is to make sure you know I've heard you and understand you. This workshop will provide some basic skills in active, nonjudgmental listening but most of the time will be spent in experiential practice. The intended audience is ministers who are sometimes stopped unexpectedly and enter into a conversation with someone in crisis. However, these skills (and their practice) are equally applicable to parents with children, children with parents, friends, siblings, and romantic partners. This workshop addresses Circle Ministry Competencies 6 and 13.

Adam Caine & Victoria Caine - Recommitment Hand Fasting Ceremony with Rev. Bo Nelson, Adam Caine, and Tori Caine

We would be grateful for your presence at our recommitment handfasting ceremony, wherein we shall contemplate and exult in the nearly eight years of our shared journey. We eagerly anticipate the company of those who esteem us, as we pledge ourselves to the forthcoming expansion and aspirations that lay ahead in our partnership. Following the ceremony at 5 pm behind the Green Dragon, we extend an invitation to join us at our camp at approximately 7pm to commemorate our commitment. Huzzah!

Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) and Adult Resiliency - PLI with Dia Crabtree

Adverse Childhood Effects (ACE) has a direct correlation between elevated likelihood of disease, physical and mental, and a high ACE score. Although it can be validating to understand a chronic illness is rooted in childhood trauma, it seems rather anticlimactic for adult trauma survivors. Recent studies have been looking at how Resiliency can assist adult trauma survivors with chronic illnesses. We will review what ACE is, learn what Resiliency is, and explore ways to up our own Resilience. This workshop addresses Circle Ministry Competencies 6, 4 and 2.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS - CPR) Training with Ori

In this workshop, you will be working on obtaining your AHA BLS certification. The AHA BLS course is a CPR certification course that teaches life-saving techniques like high-quality chest compressions, appropriate ventilation, and the use of an AED. This certification is an asset if you would like to volunteer at the med tent this year or in upcoming years. There is a $10 fee for the certification card from the AHA. Max Participants = 6.

Anyone and Everyone’s Ritual (All Gender Ritual): Radiating Hope and Resilience with Nate, Rev. Jake and friends

This year’s Ritual is for any of us who feel intimidated or overwhelmed when we think about the future, or even about today, and feel that it can be hard in these times to ground ourselves in hope and resilience. We will use music, art, creativity, movement, and our own experience, strength, and ingenuity (whether we remember we have them or not) to remind ourselves of all the nooks and crannies where we find and build hope and celebrate resilience, individually and collectively. Everyone is welcome! Geared toward teens and adults, but if you’d like to bring younger children, check in with us!

Grief – the Price of Love – PLI with Rev. Sharon Stewart

Healing from grief is not easy. We, as ministers and leaders in our community, find ourselves with little experience or tools in supporting our communities through what is sometimes a long and painful process. Providing comfort through words isn’t nearly as helpful as providing support by being willing to offer concrete ways that you can help. While divorce, sickness, injury, destruction, loss of employment are among the list of tragedies people grieve, we will primarily be discussing grief as it relates to death. As a friend, family member, clergy, or just a compassionate person you have the skills you need to support a griever, come see how. This workshop addresses Circle Ministry Competency 6.

Religion as Art: Truth and Meaning in the Practice of Religion - PLI with Patrick Finney

For many people, their spiritual quest is a search for truth and understanding. This approach leads to interminable debates over theology, correct practice and whose religion is right and true. But there is another way which has the potential to open up more options and greater freedom in one’s religious life. Rather than focusing on such issues as metaphysics and theology we will explore an approach to religion which privileges meaning and practice over truth and professions of faith. This workshop addresses Circle Ministry Competency 7.

Sacred Bonfire Circle Blessing Community Ritual with Heidi, Wrenn, Jessica, Tegan, and Juniper

Come open the Sacred Bonfire Circle in our community ritual. This year we will be using omen cards (in the form of tarot and oracle cards) to guide us. The three cards we drew to guide our communal work are The Tower, The Star, and The Magician. We will call the energy and divine guidance of each of these cards into the circle and any who feel called to will be invited to join us. Come lend your energy as we create magic together!

The Tower is associated with both destruction and liberation. It asks us to see the ways chaos can force us to change our point of view, how crisis might spark necessary change, and how adversity can lead to revolution.

The Star represents hope and serenity, renewal and inspiration, healing and connection. It is the dawning of a new day full of infinite potential and a gentle reminder that peace is always possible.

The Magician reminds us of our own personal power. It calls on us to take an active role in our lives, to make use of the tools already in our hands to manifest the change we seek. We are masters of our own destinies.

Spiritual Direction for Pagans – PLI with Bryce Woyak

At its core, spiritual direction is an intimate relationship that encourages us to deepen our connection to what we hold most divine. As someone trained in many ways of noticing, listening to, and experiencing the Sacred, a spiritual director invites us to engage with the Holy as it shows up in our daily lives. While best known from Christian monastic traditions, spiritual direction has roots spanning many cultures and religions, and people of all and no religious beliefs continue to find value from this practice. This workshop will explore how people from Pagan and nature-centered paths can authentically engage in spiritual direction, including: what to expect from spiritual direction; common types of spiritual direction relationships; how to find an appropriate spiritual director; and a sample of common techniques used in spiritual direction. This workshop primarily addresses Circle Ministry Competency 7.

Spiritually Attending to Dying with Bryce Woyak

Many of us will one day be called to be present with someone who is dying. This person may be a spouse, a family member, a friend, or even a stranger. We may have time to prepare, or we may suddenly find ourselves thrust into this role. The dying person may share our beliefs, or they may not. The circumstances of dying are individual, but the fact of death is universal. So, how do we navigate such uncertain and yet inevitable terrain? One way is to ground ourselves in our own spiritual understanding of dying. When we take time to explore our internal beliefs, we meet spiritual allies that can help us make meaning out of the dying process. This introspective workshop invites us to connect with our personal spiritual understandings of dying and with the unique spiritual allies we find in this liminal space. We will explore how our philosophies of dying and our allies can help us support those who are moving through the dying process.

Theology Roundtable – PLI with Rev. Jake

Faith leaders often get called on to answer questions or impart messages about some of life’s biggest questions, and it’s also our job to help people make meaning of their own lives and experiences, and integrate their values and life philosophy into their everyday decisions and activities. We often don’t talk a lot about these theological or philosophical concepts, though. This roundtable discussion will explore some ideas held by philosophers, theologians and/or people of faith about some of the big questions: “Who or what is/are ‘god’? “What happens when we die?” “Where did we come from before we were born?” “How do I know I’m being a ‘good’ person?” “Why is there suffering and pain in the world?” “Why did ____ happen to me?” Come ready to listen and share!
