Healing

Healing (10)

seven candles philippinesby Rev. Selena Fox of Circle Sanctuary

Prepare:

On an altar or table, assemble at least one symbol of the Philippines, frankincense or other purifying incense, incense burner, seven candle holders, seven white candles, lighter or matches, and a bell.

Philippines symbol may be a map of the country, object made in the country, or other thing that can aid in focusing awareness on the country and its community of life.

This prayer ritual is structured for individual practice but can be adapted for groups.

Begin by lighting the incense.  Use it to purify and bless the ritual area, altar and ritual objects, and yourself.

Ritual:

Ring the bell to signal the start of the rite.

Do centering by taking deep, slow breaths, and then envisioning a radiant white light emanating from within you as you connect with the Divine according to the spiritual path you practice.

Now, look at the Philippines symbol(s) and as you do, call to mind personal associations and experiences to align your awareness there.

Begin kindling the candles, and as you do, say a prayer connected with each focus:

Candle 1: The Philippines
Blessings of healing, strength, support to the Philippines, its land, its people, its creatures and plants, its environment.

Candle 2: Survivors
Blessings of healing, stamina, comfort, relief, and hope to all who survived the typhoon.

Candle 3: Dead & Dying
Blessings of peace to the souls of those who died and to those who are dying.

Candle 4: Loved Ones
Blessings of comfort, strength, healing, reconnecting, and reunion to all who have loved ones displaced, injured, missing, and/or impacted by the typhoon and its aftermath.  Condolences and comfort to those who are mourning the deaths of loved ones and grieving the loss of homes, businesses, communities, and ways of life.

Candle 5: Rescue & Recovery
Blessings of strength, endurance, protection, and support to those involved in rescuing the living, to those recovering and burying the bodies of the dead, to those clearing away wreckage, and helping in other ways.

Candle 6: Relief & Renewal
Blessings of endurance, protection, and safe and speedy passage to those bringing water, food, medical supplies, shelter, clothing, other aid to those in need.  Blessings to disaster relief organizations, media, and others that are part of relief and renewal efforts.

Candle 7: World Community
Blessings of collaboration, compassion, and understanding among peoples, nations, organizations, and religious traditions and communities the world over.  May worldwide awareness and responses bring about greater cooperation among humankind, now and in the times to come.  May this energize efforts to work together for a more peaceful planet, healthier environment, and more sustainable world.

After each candle has been lit and prayers said, meditate on peace, love, and well-being as you experience yourself spiritually contributing to the global outpouring of support.

Give Thanks to the Divine according to the path you practice.

Ring Bell to conclude the rite.

Follow-up:

After the ritual, journal about your experiences, perspectives, and insights.

Follow-up with some form of social action such as by donating money or volunteering help to an organization doing relief work.

In addition, place symbols of the Elements of Nature, such as a small rock or stone for Earth, a lit incense stick in a holder for Air, a lit candle in a candle holder for Fire, a bowl of clean water for Water, and a quartz crystal for Spirit.

If possible, also have available a singing bowl, bell, rattle, drum or some other type of musical instrument to sound during the ritual.

PhilippinesTo begin the rite, connect with, sanctify, and honor the place where you are doing the rite and then experience yourself connected with the larger circle of life that is the biosphere of Planet Earth.

Spend a few moments in silence, connecting with, honoring, and asking for assistance of the Divine according to your own spiritual path, religious tradition, or philosophy.

Then, focus on being a conduit for spiritual healing.

Next, make a sacred sound with your voice and/or a musicial instrument, and as you do, experience yourself connecting with others who are also involved in spiritual healing work for the Philippines.

Now, focus on the Philippines as a whole as you sending love, compassion, strength, support, and healing.

Call on the Elements, using associated symbols as part of prayers of relief.

Powers of Earth, aid the distribution of food and supplies to those in need.
Powers of Air, bring plentiful clean air to breathe to those in need.
Powers of Fire, restore electricity & other sources of energy to those in need.
Powers of Water, bring plentiful clean water to those in need.
Powers of Spirit, bless those in need with healing, support, resilience, comfort, and love.
So Be It.

Make a sacred sound with your voice and/or musical instrument.

Bless, protect, comfort, and renew the Living who have survived the typhoon.
Bless those who have died and who are dying in their transitions to the Otherworld, and comfort their living loved ones.
Bless, strengthen, and protect those doing rescue, relief , and recovery.
Bless with stamina, wisdom, and effective communication and collaboration all those who are  helping and seeking to help.
Bless, renew, and make safe the land, the waters, the air, and sources of energy.
So Be It.

Make a sacred sound with your voice and/or musical instrument.

Now do a healing and well-being meditation.  This can be in silence, with chanting, through playing a musical instrument, or a combination.

To conclude, give thanks to the sacred forces you worked with:

Thanks to the Divine.  Thanks to the Earth, the Air, the Fire, the Water, and the Spirit.
Continued Blessings to the Philippines to those there, and to those connected.
Blessed Be.

Roberta Stewart Life Appreciation

Written by

roberta stewart 1Roberta Stewart is a Pagan rights activist and a longtime member of Circle Sanctuary.

Roberta is best known for her work in the successful quest to have the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs authorize the Pentacle for inclusion on the grave markers it issues for deceased veterans.

After her husband, Sgt. Patrick Stewart, was killed in action in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, she joined the Veteran Pentacle Quest efforts of Lady Liberty League and Circle Sanctuary, and spoke out in media across the nation and in private meetings on Capitol Hill and at VA headquarters in Washington, DC.

Roberta was one of the plaintiffs in Circle Sanctuary's federal lawsuits against the VA brought with the help of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

The settlement of Circle Sanctuary's lawsuit in the federal district court of Western Wisconsin resulted in the VA finally adding the Pentacle to its list of emblems of belief that can be included on veteran grave markers.

roberta stewart 2Sgt. Patrick Stewart, the first Wiccan soldier to be killed in the War on Terrorism, is now honored with a Pentacle marker issued by the Nevada governor at the Northern Nevada Veteran Cemetery in Fernley and with his VA-issued Pentacle marker at Circle Cemetery at Circle Sanctuary headquarters in Wisconsin.  Roberta, joined by Pagans of many paths, was part of both dedication ceremonies.

Since the Pentacle Quest victory, Roberta has continued her work with Lady Liberty League and Circle Sanctuary on the quest for equal rights for Pagans in society.  She also has been active in providing healing support to Gold Star families of many faiths.

Roberta is in the final part of her life's journey and has begun working with hospice.  She has gastroparesis, a disease with no known cure.

Roberta decided to share her medical condition publicly in order to help build public awareness of gastroparesis and the need for research to find a cure for the many afflicted with this.

Pagan Voices of 9/11 Survivors

Victoria Chapman (World Trade Center, New York City)

As a survivor of the horrendous events that took place on United States soil September 11, 2001, I am writing to share my story as well as a poem written shortly after. I wish I could be there at the Sanctuary to join in the day of Remembrance, but unfortunately am geographically challenged however shall be there in spirit.

Let me take you back to that unforgettable day that changed the lives of so many too numerous to mention here. In the new dawn of a sunlit morn, it was the first day of school for many children in New York City. Parents, teachers and students were already anxious as to what this day was to unfold. Traffic was snarled as the hustle and bustle of the city swarmed with heightened activity. The business as usual attitude of corporations and employees running off to meetings and clocking in to start a brand new work week was abuzz with apprehension, trepidation, cockiness as well as confidence.

Arriving early for a breakfast meeting with clients on the 74th floor of WTC 2, I perused the daily financials and tickers from the monitors as I gazed out the windows overlooking the George Washington Bridge smiling as to the day's prospects. Glancing down watching the commuter ferries dot the Hudson and drones of people looking like ants scurrying here and there, I scanned the horizon again and took notice of a dot on the horizon that seems out of place. The moments ticked by and others on the trading floor noticed that it was a plane coming in low. Concern arose as they stood for a better view, unknowingly watching history unfold. In a Sam Peckinpah cinematic chain of events, frame by shocking frame, we realized that this was an object hurling from the skies towards our beloved city and gasps arose as we helplessly watched it barrel into the tower right next to us. The blast and impact rocked the building as terror incited adrenaline rushes and sheer panic overcame me. "I have family that works there!" screamed in my brain. I knew too many friends and associates whom I prayed were delayed in getting to work and were not present that very moment.

Gathering some semblance of reasoning, and recalling the bombing of '93, I instinctively called off the meeting and told those present that "I'm out of here, I advise everyone else to do the same." We gathered our belongings and headed to the elevator banks, minds racing and uncertainty clouding judgment in a temporary moment of shock. No words can truly describe and justify what had just been witnessed. Time stood still yet, fear was imperative to a speedy exit. Arriving in the concourse listening to the PA system attempting to calm and coerce the inhabitants that this was an isolated incident, to return to your places of business, I recoiled in denial and continued to rush towards the street. That is when the second plane hit and rocked the world as I knew it around me.

"RUN!!!" and screams rose in the cacophony of chaos as the throngs of blurred faces poured out in panic, papers and ashes rained down; the acrid smell of fumes and heat engulfing and assaulting the senses. What was once observed as differences among humanity with regards to color, race, creed and economic divisions were erased as zombie-like creatures covered in gray dust and debris. The only vivid colour being the bright red of blood that runs through every human being as people paused to help one another flee the proximity to a safer zone - wherever that might be. I ran towards the water and onto a ferry that was crowded yet somber... shock waves evident, hitting all with wave after wave like those we drifted across to another shore, not even fully comprehending or sure of where we were going.

Communication broke down with the exception of the strangers around us and a limited number of "walkie-talkie" phones capable of getting a lifeline to others were all we had to cling to. There were Christians, Jews, Taoists and Buddhists, Pagans, Agnostics, Atheists and yes, even Muslims united together in a fight and a flight for our lives, fleeing towards our Freedom from the tyrannical events still unfolding, unbeknownst to us in our isolation. We were wounded, some physically, all scarred emotionally from the impact, yet we were alive; something that cannot be said for those that did not share our luck.

The rest of the day revealed two more unwarranted attacks on innocent American citizens, targets of individuals on a mission that did not discern who or what they were attacking. Visitors from foreign nations, travelers from abroad, fellow brethren, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, fathers and mothers - all human beings just living life to all of a sudden have it snuffed like a candle in the wind.

What did these people do to warrant such demise? Did anyone consider their remains? What of those who ran into the danger zone only to be buried among rubble or vaporized in explosions? Did a Muslim nation give uproar as to their brother's funerary rights? Did not every mother weep at the loss of a child? Did these radical extremists consort with the American government as to their presence into U.S. territory? Explain to me as to why these are such important issues now and not then. Crimes against humanity have no justification, rhyme nor reason in either situation... they just are and we need to turn the page and move on in the book of life to a new chapter.

To those who cry foul as to the measures and tactics that brought down a global terrorist, a radical extremist that did not discern one target from another, that violated and vilified the lives of those he terrorized, I say ENOUGH ALREADY! We did not start this reign of bloodshed; we only asked and received an iota of justice in comparison to all those lost to one power hungry individual. Thousands of innocent civilians worldwide have been annihilated and way too many "soldiers" of many nations have been killed or wounded, and lives changed as a result of the plans, ideas and ideals of a select few that would try to continue this reign of terror.

"Survivors Guilt" as I am told, has its consequences. I just pray to the powers that be, that politics and lines drawn separating humanity are erased and we as human beings, become secure in our own humanity, start becoming humans doing. What has been done cannot be undone. What today holds for the future is a change in the way we view life and the world as people, no matter our differences. We are born, breathe the same air, have the same needs of water, nutrition, shelter and love. We all bleed red and shall all one day die. It's living and how that matters as to future generations of hope, peace and love. As Gandhi once stated, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." All I ask is no more... please!

"One"

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.
As we carried each other down the stairs of the
burning building,
We became one class.
As we lit candles of waiting and hope,
We became one generation.
As the firefighters and police officers fought their
way into the inferno,
We became one gender.
As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.
As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.
As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,
We became one body.
As we mourned together the great loss,
We became one family.
As we cried tears of grief and loss,
We became one soul.
As we retell with pride of the sacrifice of heroes,
We become one people.
We are
One color
One class
One generation
One gender
One faith
One language
One body
One family
One soul
One people
We are The Power of One.
We are United.
We are America.

Poem Background: Victoria, now of Florida, was working in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and was among those who escaped. She sent this 9/11 poem to us and Selena Fox will be reading it at the memorial rite she is conducting at Circle Sanctuary Nature Preserve on September 10, 2011 as well as sharing it at other memorial events. Victoria writes: "Much love & light to you and all who are participating near and far, today and every day. Brightest Blessings!"

Pentacle of Healing

Written by

by Selena Fox

Previously published in Fall/Winter 2005 issue of Circle Magazine

Healing is a journey from illness to wellness. Healing is rebalancing and renewing. Healing is transformational and multidimensional.

The multidimensionality of healing is also known as holistic. Holistic healing recognizes that restoring well being includes more than treating physical disease. When there is physical illness, other dimensions of self and life also are impacted, including mood, thinking, activity, and soul.

As a priestess, psychotherapist, and counselor, I serve as both a catalyst and a guide in doing healing work with others. Drawing from my background in Wiccan spirituality and Paganism, and my Psychology studies and practice over the past thirty-five years, I have developed a holistic framework that I call the Pentacle of Healing. The Pentacle is a five pointed interlaced Pentagram within a Circle. Each of the five points of the Pentagram represents a dimension of healing, and the Circle represents the harmonious integration and functioning of these dimensions.

I use the Pentacle of Healing framework for assessment as well as for considering treatment options. I share here some of the questions to ask in working with each healing dimension. I also include several examples of healing modalities that might be used in treating problems in each.

Physical. The Physical dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Earth, pertains to both the physical body and the physical environment. How well does your physical body function? How clean is it? How balanced and aligned is your posture? What foods, beverages, medicines, and other things do you consume? What lotions, soaps, fragrances, and other substances do you put on or around your body? How clean and comfortable are the clothes that you wear? What toxins are you exposed to at home, in your neighborhood, at work, and other places you frequent? How strong is your immune system? Physical healing modalities include improving nutrition, taking medicines, getting vaccinations, internal and external cleansing of the body, massage, decluttering living and work spaces, and reducing or eliminating exposure to toxins.

Mental. The Mental dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Air, pertains to the mind and cognition. How well is your mind functioning? How good is your memory? How well do you listen, focus attention, and absorb information? How healthy is your self-talk? What do you take into your mind? What studies are you engaged in? What kinds of things do you read and view in print, online, and in the mass media? What do you talk about with others? Mental healing modalities include journaling, counseling, repeating affirmations, reading thought-provoking works, solving and engaging in other types of mental exercises, and education.

Behavioral. The Behavioral dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Fire, pertains to actions and lifestyle. How healthy is your lifestyle? What habits are enhancing your well being? What habits are destructive? What stressors are in your life? How well do you man- age stress? What is your balance between work and play? How much time do you spend with others and how much do you spend alone? What is the quality of time you have for yourself? What quantity and quality of sleep do you get each night? Behavioral healing modalities include walking, stretching, dancing, swimming, other types of exercise, time management, creative expression, travel, hobbies, career development, volunteer service, and stress management exercises.

Emotional. The Emotional dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Water, pertains to feelings and relationships. How emotionally fit and mature are you? How healthy are your relationships with others? How happy are you? What upsets you? How do you process anger and frustration? How do you deal with sadness and loss? What do you fear? How honest are you with yourself? How well do you accept criticism? How honest are you with others? Who do you trust, feel close to, and call on in times of need? Who calls on you? What are you doing to improve your emotional and social well being? Emotional healing modalities include gestalt therapy, rational-emotive therapy, music therapy, art therapy, laugh therapy, other expressive forms of psychotherapy, peer counseling, emotive journaling, and support groups.

Spiritual. The Spiritual dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Spirit, pertains to the soul and sacred forces. How healthy is your spiritual life? What is your religion, spirituality, or philosophy and how does it help you? What form(s) of the Divine do you honor and connect with? What type of spiritual practices do you engage in and how often? What affiliations do you have with spiritual communities, groups, and paths? What places are sacred to you and how often do you visit? How do you work with intuition and spiritual guidance in your life? In what ways are you developing spiritually? Spiritual healing modalities include meditation, ritual, prayer, altar work, sacred site pilgrimages, spiritual studies, vision questing, divination, dream exploration, and spiritual healing work.

The Circle that surrounds and connects the five points of the Pentagram in this model signifies an integrative approach to healing and wellness. It is important that approaches selected for the various dimensions of healing, as well as healers and health care professionals guiding those approaches, work in harmony with the one needing healing, in order to restore balance to each dimension as well as to the whole.

Healing for Japan Ritual

Written by

March 2011
by Selena Fox

On an altar or table, place one or more symbols of Japan. This could be a print-out of a small map of Japan, an image of the flag of Japan, the name Japan written on a card, or an object that came from Japan.

Also place a Sun image to represent the Japanese Sun Goddess as Amaterasu Omikami. This might take the form of a solar symbol, glyph, or a traditional or contemporary Amaterasu rendition.

In addition, place symbols of the Elements of Nature, such as a small rock or stone for Earth, a lit incense stick in a holder for Air, a lit candle in a candle holder for Fire, a bowl of clean water for Water, and a quartz crystal for Spirit.

If possible, also have available some time of musical instrument to sound during the rite, such as a rattle, drum, singing bowl, didgeridoo, or flute.

After assembling the items and just before performing the rite, wash your hands with flowing water as a way of purifying yourself for the ceremony.

To begin the rite, connect with, sanctify, and honor the place where you are doing the rite and then experience yourself connected with the larger circle of life that is the biosphere of Planet Earth.

Spend a few moments in silence, connecting with, honoring, and asking for assistance of the Divine according to your own spiritual path, religious tradition, or philosophy.

Then, focus on being a conduit for spiritual healing.

Next, make a sacred sound with your voice and/or a musicial instrument, and as you do, experience yourself connecting with others who are also involved in spiritual healing work for Japan.

Now, focus on Japan as a whole as you sending love, compassion, strength, support, and healing.

Holding or directing your attention to the Sun symbol, connect with the Sacred Sun:

Amaterasu Omikami, Sacred Sun, help Japan, its inhabitants, and all those impacted by these disasters.

Bless, protect, comfort, and renew the Living who have survived the earthquake, the aftershocks, and the tsunami.

Bless those who have died and who are dying in their transitions to the Otherworld, and comfort their living loved ones.

Bless, strengthen, and protect those doing rescue, relief, and recovery.

Bless with stamina, wisdom, and effective communication and collaboration all those who are helping and seeking to help.

Bless, renew, and make safe the land, the waters, the air, and the nuclear power plants.

Thanks to Amaterasu Omikami, Sacred Sun.

Continued Blessings to Japan, to those there, and to those connected.

Blessed Be.

Healing RibbonsDSC 8437

We do spiritual healing work throughout the year at Circle Sanctuary Nature Preserve in Wisconsin, USA, and have sacred sites dedicated to healing. If you would like spiritual healing energy directed to you, please send us a request in writing for our indoor altar, and if you wish, also include a ribbon for our outdoor shrine. Briefly describe your request, beginning with a phrase such as "I want to be cured of..." or "I want to receive healing for..." Phrasing it in this positive way facilitates healing. If you choose to send a healing prayer ribbon, choose a color that you think best symbolizes you and your request. The ribbon can be of any color, and should be between 1 and 3 feet long and between 1/8 and 1/2 inches wide. Ribbons or strips of cloth can be satin, cotton, cotton/polyester blend, or other material. After selecting your ribbon and before sending it to us, hold the ribbon in your hands, reflect upon your request, and then tie a knot at or near one of its ends as you imagine being healed.

Healing requests and ribbons should be submitted directly by those needing the healing whenever possible. In requesting healing for animal friends, babies, those in comas, and others unable to submit requests themselves, please explain this in sending in the request. If sending in a ribbon, if possible, have them hold or touch the ribbon you send in their behalf. This physical connection helps us in focusing on them in doing healing prayers for them. The spiritual healing work we do at Circle Sanctuary is designed to work in harmony with other treatment modalities, not as a subsitute.
