This is, of course, a solemn occasion. You have gathered to dedicate these markers to fallen loved ones - heroes who died in the service of their nation.
But while we must acknowledge our grief, we must also understand that we have reasons today to feel empowered about what has been accomplished. Today’s event is a momentous occasion - and it’s one that could not have taken place even two months ago. As you stand and look at the markers that commemorate the lives and sacrifices of your loved ones, bearing the symbol of their faith that you worked so hard to get placed there, you have many reasons to feel proud.
To Roberta Stewart, Karen DePolito, Jill Medicine Heart Combs and Selena Fox I say, "You haven’t just won a victory for yourselves or your loved ones. Indeed, you reminded the entire nation that in America, there are no second-class religions or second-class citizens."
None of you should have had to undertake this fight. The Department of Veterans Affairs, the Justice Department and other federal agencies should have recognized their obligation to do what was right. But since we had to fight it, there are no better allies Americans United could have wished to have at its side than all of you.
Although I am not with you in person, be assured that I am in spirit. Also with you, I believe, are the millions of Americans who value our great tradition of religious liberty and all those willing to stand up and fight to preserve it.
