EDITORIAL: Inside the First Amendment: The Nature of Discrimination

Charles C. Haynes, Senior Scholar of the First Amendment Center, has spoken out about the need to uphold religious freedom for Wiccans and for everyone, in this editorial published on-line and in newspapers around the nation, such as in April 3, 2007 issue of the Courier-Journal newspaper of Louisville, Kentucky.

Here is the excerpt about the Quest from this editorial. A link to the entire editorial is under Media Coverage at the Veteran Pentacle Quest website:

"After nine years of 'reviewing the process,' the Department of Veterans Affairs still hasn't approved the pentacle -- a five-pointed star that symbolizes Wiccan faith -- as an "emblem of belief" that can be placed on government headstones of Wiccan soldiers.

Despite the fact that the 38 approved emblems include religions of every stripe (and atheism), the VA will not add the pentacle. Does this mean Wiccan soldiers are good enough to die abroad, but not good enough to be buried with respect at home? "

NEVADA LEGISLATURE & THE QUEST

On March 21, 2007, the Assembly and Senate of the Nevada State Legislature honored Sgt. Patrick Stewart and Roberta Stewart and others. Assemblyman Grady spoke about the Quest as part of his remarks. See Paula Johnson's report:

WICCAN SOLDIER SPEAKS OUT

Captain Richard Briggs, Jr., a member of the Order of the Pentacle and a Wiccan soldier, is among those speaking out for Wiccan religious freedom and the need for the VA to add the Pentacle to its list of emblems of belief that can be included on the veteran grave markers it issues. Among the materials he submitted to the VA as part of the public comment-making last month was his letter to US Senator John Comyn:
