In the past, we have requested that the US Department of Veterans Affairs add our religious emblem, the Pentacle, to its National Cemetery Administration's list of emblems of belief that can be inscribed on government-issued memorial markers, headstones, and plaques for deceased veterans.
It has been nearly nine years since the quest to have the Pentacle added to this list began.
It is time for the US Department of Veterans Affairs to end its consideration and finally approve this emblem so that deceased Wiccan veterans can at last be afforded the same respect and rights as those of other religions.
We represent major Wiccan denominations. We have members of our churches who have served and are serving in the US military around the world, including in Operation Enduring Freedom and the War in Iraq.
On this day marking America's birthday, we call to President George W. Bush, to the Secretary of US Department of Veterans Affairs R. James Nicholson, and to the head of the National Cemetery Administration, Under Secretary William Tuerk to uphold the US Constitution and America's tradition of Religious Freedom by immediately approving the addition of the Pentacle.
