Pagan voters and Supporters of Religious Freedom in Bob Barr's Georgia District Monday, May 24, 1999 Greetings, I am writing to ask your help in responding to an attack on religious freedom. According to our records you live in or near the 7th Congressional District of Georgia. Rep. Bob Barr, Congressman for the 7th District, has begun a public political campaign against the Wiccan religion. In media interviews and in his widely circulated May 18, 1999 press release (http://www.house.gov/barr/p_051899.html), sent to media, government officials, and others, Rep. Barr not only ridiculed and defamed the Wiccan religion with his remarks, but demanded that the US Military treat the Wiccan religion differently than other religions in accommodating the religious needs of military personnel. In response to Rep. Barr's press release, several Wiccan priestesses and priests who are constituents of Rep. Barr contacted staff at both his district and Washington, DC offices in an attempt to provide accurate information about the Wiccan religion and clear up misconceptions that seem inherent in Rep. Barr's remarks. However, it appears that Rep. Barr is persisting in his efforts against the Wiccan religion, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Sunday, May 23, 1999. Barr's district, please identify yourself as a constituent and voice your opposition to his attack on First Amendment rights. It is not necessary to reveal your own religious orientation in expressing your views -- speak out as a citizen concerned about religious freedom issues. In writing letters, be concise, courteous, intelligent, and informational. Be aware that anything that you write might be lifted out of context by him and/or his staff -- therefore, consider carefully your tone and words. Send your letters to: Rep. The Town Meeting will be held at the Marietta Main Branch Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta. The Pagan educational gathering will be held outside the Library beginning at around 9 am.
